Sunflowers for Selfies

In a corner of Connecticut, on a 17-acre farm grow fields of sunflowers.

But these flowers, which live on Buttonwood Farm in Griswold, are more than a sunny backdrop for selfies, they also planted the seeds for an annual Sunflowers for Wishes fundraiser, organized by the farm’s owners, which has raised more than $1 million over the years for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Connecticut.

The farm, and the fundraiser, also provided inspiration to neighbors and officials in Griswold to adopt the moniker “the Sunflower Capital of New England.”

With their location in the center of town, Jewett City Savings Bank was perfectly positioned to help support both the new town nickname and the fundraiser.

It started with the Bank’s drive-up ATM which, with its back facing Main Street, provided the perfect canvas for a sunflower mural painted by a local artist.

The Bank posted photos of the mural as it developed. The painting took several weeks to complete.

After the mural was complete, the Bank launched a “Sunflower Selfie” contest – for each selfie taken in front of the mural the Bank would give $5 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Connecticut.

The campaign was supported primarily through Bank-owned channels including in branch (merchandising and handouts), as well as online & social.

The best part of the campaign? Watching all the “sunny selfies” appear in our feed!
